The book presents a complex overview of animal law. Starting with historical, philosophical and social perspectives of human-animal relationship, it focuses on the current position of animals in law and society. It identifies the main weak points of a present use of animals in farming, food industry, science, and in entertainment and shows the ways how they are reflected in legislation. The law is seen as a developing system of normative regulation that reacts on strong impulses emerging from the society; this is especially apparent with regard to the dynamic process of legislative development from the first anti-cruelty laws to the up-to-date animal welfare standards, accompanied by a change of the legal status of animals in many national legal systems. The book introduces a full range of animal law issues, including difficult and controversial matters such as practical and legal aspects of animal testing and modern biotechnologies (animal cloning and related patent questions). The main features of animal rights movement, which is in general little known in central European countries, are presented as well. The description of the current animal law regulation covers the international law, the European Union law and national laws (including comparison of eleven animal welfare legislations). The analysis of the Czech animal welfare legislation and its practical application constitutes a separate chapter.
