000- Wien Balkan 000 beginnt in Wien
Welcome!
Please visit our (slowly) developing project "Humanistic discourses, civil society and social movements in Romania and Bulgaria, with special focus on the so called Western Balkans 6 region. Online at https://fewd.univie.ac.at/humanism/western-balkans/
A “Balkan analysis” by the “star” philosopher Slavoj Žižek is always interesting to read. See the already 1999 published article “The Spectre of Balkan” in The Journal of International Institute, http://hdl.handle.net/2027/spo.4750978.0006.202 = https://quod.lib.umich.edu/j/jii/4750978.0006.202?view=text;rgn=main
About Vienna and the Balkans is the Austrian Chancellor Metternich (1773–1859) often cited. He (should) once has remarked, "The Balkans begin at the Rennweg", which was then a mere road in Landstraße, out of Vienna towards the east. I don’t know at the moment a serious source. But maybe I think I found one in the book by Foteva, Ana 2014. Do the Balkans Begin in Vienna? The Geopolitical and Imaginary Borders between the Balkans and Europe. https://www.peterlang.com/document/1051119
And still impressive is how many academic journals are dealing with the complexity of the Balkan region / Southeastern Europe, see a small but important slection at https://fewd.univie.ac.at/humanism/cee/journals/
Metternich (1800? "The Balkans begin at the Rennweg",). " Austrian Chancellor Metternich (1773–1859) once remarked, "The Balkans begin at the Rennweg", which was then a mere road in Landstraße, out of Vienna towards the east. 2025.06 unter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landstra%C3%9Fe ".
