Welcome to SAWAR - Students for animal welfare and animal rights!
Already in the year 1986 a group of students and academics at University of Vienna, Salzburg and Graz formed the multi- and interdisciplinary Austrian platform “Students for animal welfare and animal rights - SAWAR”.
Inspired by the books “Animal Liberation” 1975 by Prof. Peter Singer; "Animals, Men and Morals" 1971 edited by Stanley and Roslind Godlovitch, John Harris; "Animals Rights - a Symposium" 1979 edited by David Paterson and Richard D. Ryder. And especially motivated by Prof. Tom Regans book “The Case for Animal Rights” from 1983. This book was the first book in western history which received internationally attention on this topic in the leading academic discourses all over the world.
From 1986 till the founding of the FEWD in the year 2001 members of the SAWAR searched regularly in all relevant databases. They collected books and especially articles from peer-reviewed journals for seminars, reading and discussion circle. And since this time exists at University of Vienna a journal club.
Since 2001 is SAWAR part of different FEWD animal advocacy activities especially the the FEWD Animal Advocacy Journal Club.
